Defining the British Reign in India: "THE RAJ"
By Alfred Gabb
You will already know that the word Raj is rule in Hindi. The Hindu rulers of the former princely states of India, were for example known as Rajahs. Up until the ´Indian Mutiny´ of 1857, which also became known as the ´Indian War of Indepence´ subsequently, a large part of what was known then as India was virtually ruled by the Honourable British East India Company, a company with a Royal Charter from the British Crown. On suppression of the mutiny the nominal head of the Indian Empire. the Indian Muslim Emperor Bahadur Shah, the last Mohul Emperor was tried and condemned to exile in Burma. "The British Crown, now in the reign of Queen Victoria, formally took over the Government of British India in 1858 from the East India Company. It followed the ´Government of India Act 1858´ promulgated by Parliament ´for the better government of India.´ A royal proclamation was made on 1st November 1858. Queen Victoria became the first British Empress of the Indian Empire" and the British Raj commenced. (Gabb 1998/2000)
Sincerely, Alfred Gabb
