Reunion '98 Update

Yes, it s on, contrary to the rumours that were floating around.
Good News ... The Constitution of the International Federation has now been officially registered. Currently there are four members of the federation under the Constitution.
Anglo Indian Social Club (London), AIIT (Anglo-Indians In Touch), and Australia's Anglo-Indian Association(lnc.) Perth are the three founding members. The Anglo Indian Guild (Bangalore) is registered as a member under the criteria of a bonafide organisation committed to supporting and pursuing the Anglo-Indian cause by way of history, culture and heritage and has been in existence for at least three years.
By this Constitution, AIIT is the only official member of the International Federation for the continent of North America at this time, and therefore, will be the official ticket seller of Reunion IV tickets/delegate badges.
Regarding The sale of tickets/badges, AIIT has been in close touch with the Indian organisers of Reunion IV. We have tried to get a reduction in the price of the tickets with the only success being in the increased age of youth tickets. The cost of tickets is as follows:
Adult over 18yrs.- $100.00 US for all four events, including two full dinners.
Youth ages 6-18yrs. - $ 50.00 US for all four events, including two full dinners.
Admission free for children under age 6.
The perceived high cost of the tickets is due to the overhead expenses related to holding the functions and the uncertainty of the total number of delegates. The organisers have advised that once they have a good idea of the numbers by the way of firm commitment, there could be a possibility of a reduction in ticket prices, if the projections look good.
Tickets must be purchased (and paid for) by May 31, 1997. as we recognise that purchasing tickets upfront may pose a potential problem. We have decided to handle ticket sales as following: -50% of the purchase price (US$ 100.00 or $ 50.00) will be taken initially and a receipt issued for the amount of money received. -The remaining 50% will be collected on or before May 31, 1997 at which time tickets/delegate badges will be handed over to the purchaser.
This procedure will be helpful in two ways:
(1) The complete ticket price is not required up front.
(2) Should the ticket prices be reduced, purchasers will only be required to pay the balance of the ticket prices in effect.
All tickets/badges must have a valid passport photo that is to be endorsed by AIIT.

Day 1 Tue., 6/01/98 Inaugural Function
5-6 p.m. Ecumenical Service
6-6.45 p.m. Opening Speeches
7-8 p.m. Variety Concert
8.00 p.m. onwards Dinner and mingle around.
Refreshments and Liquor on sale.
Day 2 Wed., 7/01/98 Sports Festival/Picnic Atmosphere.
March Past/Hockey Games/Other Games (Cricket doubtful since it involves the whole day). Whole day programme. Evening Free.
Day 3 Thurs., 8/01/98 Symposium/Food Fest.
Symposium in hall at 3.30 p.m. Thereafter, Food Festival. Food & drinks will be on sale.
Day 4 Fri., 9/01/98 Free Day. Sightseeing tour.
Day 5 Sat., 10/01/98 Farewell Dance.
Robin Woodley (A-I Social Club, London) informs us that they are overseeing arrangements for Travel, Package Tours in Bangalore and Southern India, and accomodation for those attending Reunion IV from the UK and Europe. He takes pleasure in advising us that their Agents in Bangalore Palace Gardens, managing director of which is Princess Meenakshi Urs, The daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, and the sister of the present Maharaja.

I am wondering if you can help me to trace the name GREENWAY or HALL who could be related to me.
My great, great, grandfather was Samuel GREENWAY born in India who married Rose Anne ANDERSON, and my grandmother was Eveline HALL(nee GREENWAY) also born in India. I myself was born in Pakistan which in those days was part of India. There were lots of Greenways in India well before the Indian Mutiny in 1857 who were related to Samuel either as siblings or his own children.

Seminar on Representation of Women in Parliament and
State Legislatures Held at W.B. Legislative Assembly
On March 11, 1997 the inaugural session began at the Assembly House, Calcutta, with Ms. Gillian D Costa-Hart MLA giving the welcome address.
The Hon'ble Speaker, Shri Hashim Abdul Halim gave the Inaugural speech
Resolution on Reservation for Women in the Lok Sabha and the State Legislatures.
Considering ... that women have been given equal political rights with men in the Indian Constitution and that India has been a signatory to International conventions for Eradication of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAN -1979) and is therefore committed to remove all barriers to the realisation of equal political rights.
RECALLING - That apart from constituting nearly 50% of the Indian population, women play an important role in the Economic and Social Life of the Nation, often without getting any recognition and that in the anti-imperialistic struggle as well as other democratic struggles, the participants of women has often been significant and outstanding.
DEPLORING - that inspite of such participation the social and economic status of large masses of women has not improved significantly and this status is also being subjected to new attacks in consequence of the erosion of democratic norms in recent times.
DEPLORING FURTHER... that inspite of equal poltical rights granted by the Constitution of India the representation of Women in the Lok Sabha and in the State Legislature remains disproportionately small and has not risen signaficantly over the past 50 years, and that with the erosion of democratic norms, the posibility of such reservation is being further reduced.
WE HEREBY RESOLVE... to extend our full support to the proposal to amend the Constitution for the reservation of 33.3% seats for women in the Lok Sabha and in the State Legislatures, for the broadening of our democracy, for helping our Country to move foward into the 21stl Century by leaps and bounds and as a step towards the empowerment of women. We furthur resolve to strive towards positive measures to ensure the facilitation of the direct participation of women in politics at all levels and to this end we resolve to ask the Lok Sabha to pass the Constitution (81st Amendment) Bill wilhout any further delay.

Your article in the Anglo-Indian March 97 issued on Dr. Stephen Smith - Policeman & Rocketeer makes interesting and infommative reading. However, the information "Smith's son died in England before his mother" is very much incorrect.
It was much after the mother's (Fay Harcourt) death that her son migrated to England with his wife to join their daughter Gloria and grand daughter Lucy when he died in England.
In passing I would like to congratulate your great effort in producing the News Letter - Anglo-Indian, the publication should be compiled.

Cary Edwards Is King of Hearts
Calcutta is proving lucky for all aspiring models. In the recent Graviera Mr. India 1997, Trophy, an Anglo-Indian lad of 18 years, Cary Edwards from Bangalore won the cash prize of Rs. 25,000 for Mr. King of Hearts.
Edwards was the audience's apparent favourite. Cary got the maximum crowd applause with girls screaming, "We want you Cary." This Virgo stole a number of hearts with his witty and humourous response to the compere question, "Is golf a rich man's game?" He replied, "I'm a good golfer but I'm not rich."
The judges Mahesh Bhatt, Simi Garewal, Madhu Sapre, Rohit Bal, Titu Beri and a host of others.
When Cary was asked what qualities of Superman; Batman, Spiderman and HeMan would he incorporate, he said, "The dual personality of Superman, Since I need a professional and private Life, the night Life of Batman, to spin a web like Spiderman and the Machoism of Heman".
Commendable indeed! Cary likes sports, music, dancing and wants to be a professional model
